2-Week Japan Itinerary Without Changing Hotels More Than Twice

How I keep hotel moves minimal: two bases (Tokyo + Osaka/Kyoto) and day trips.

Bases

  • Base 1: Tokyo (5-6 nights) — Asakusa/Ueno for budget, Shinjuku/Shibuya for vibe
  • Base 2: Osaka or Kyoto (7-8 nights) — Osaka for value, Kyoto for proximity to temples

Tokyo Block

  • Day trips: Nikko, Kamakura, Hakone (back same night)
  • In-city: Asakusa, Shibuya, teamLab, Odaiba onsens

Osaka/Kyoto Block

  • Day trips: Nara, Kobe, Himeji, Hiroshima (Shinkansen day)
  • In-city: Osaka food nights, Kyoto early-morning temples

Why It Works

  • Fewer check-ins/outs, more exploring
  • Keep luggage light; use station lockers for day trips if needed
  • JR Pass optional; IC + selected Shinkansen legs often cheaper
