Japan Luggage Forwarding (Takkyubin) Guide: How It Works and When to Use It
How I use takkyubin to skip hauling bags: when it’s worth it, how to send, and what it costs.
When I Use It
- Ski trips (ship gear ahead)
- Kyoto/Osaka hops to avoid dragging bags on metro
- Airport deliveries (send to hotel or back to airport)
How It Works
- Fill out form (hotel can help), pay by size/distance (¥1,500-3,000 typical)
- Bags arrive next day (sometimes same day locally)
- Keep essentials in a small daypack
Tips & Pitfalls
- Blackout dates around New Year/holidays: ship earlier
- Keep medication/valuables with you
- Add hotel name/room holder in English + katakana if possible
- Keep receipts; photo the label
